Not all voltage protectors are created equal. The PLD-VP series uses high quality, low ESR capacitors from world reknown makers like Panasonic and Rubycon. These are not the same as the capacitors you pick up from your local DSE or RadioShack store. Do not be fooled into thinking that larger capacitor is always better. Larger, cheaper capacitors can have higher resistance and cannot respond swiftly to the voltage dips. Using an excessively large capacitor on your receiver can in fact cause damage to your BEC and even prevent it from starting up (because a capacitor looks like a short-circuit initially, a bigger capacitor looks like a bigger short!). One way to determine if you need a bigger VP (or more) is to feel the temperature of the VP after a bit of use. If it is hot then you need a bigger unit or better battery/BEC. The heat comes from the capacitor having to work hard to handle the ripple on the power rails.  |
